Double European Champion Lee Martin, has chosen to race the VEGA conversion for the Tamiya TRF201X. Lee will be running the Vega Elite 201 2nd Generation – a mid-motor conversion for the Tamiya TRF201X from Vega until his sponsors Tamiya TRF have a mid-motor car of their own to compete on the high grip tracks that the UK National scene mostly comprises.

Lee visited the Team Xtreme / VEGA site and spent the day discussing his design changes and working with the designers to create the new version 2nd Generation VEGA 201 conversion.

VEGA:
The car was delivered to Lee, on the same night as he was to race it. It was quickly assembled and put straight on the track there and then. Lee managed to win the meeting amongst other top names racing and also managed the fastest lap times each and every run. Proving he
had the speed and consistency. It’s fair to say he was ‘On Fire’ bearing in mind the car or Lee had no previous track time.

Just released, the new series of Vega Elite 2WD race conversions for most major top-end race buggies. Featuring CNC machined aerospace 7075 alloy tub chassis & gearbox, motorplate heat sink, rear shock tower, bodyshell and more.

This exciting new conversion changes the weight distribution of the car, allowing it to jump more level & massively helps in-air control and powered landings.

Testing has shown the conversion gives a new more positive feel to the car, allowing for a more aggressive driving style. Flatter jumps, quicker landings and better cornering is bringing noticeably faster and consistent lap times.

Below is a race report from one of our Vega Drivers, using the Vega-Elite Mid Motor Conversion for the Kyosho RB5!!

Having only received the car a week earlier in prototype form i was looking forward to collecting my new parts from Lewis (Vega designer). Once i arrived at Ardent my parts were ready to replace the alloy shocktower and proto motor mount i had been running a week earlier.
These parts were put on to bring the car very close to production, and i have to say the car looks the trick!!!

The venue at Ardent is very much a Touring Car venue that have started to run Off road, this is mainly evident in small things like track markings and layouts. But still a very well presented track with a few jumps etc.

I have to say the large amount of carpet, probably 95% of the track is not to my liking. But it is the challenge that is put before me and one i have been working on over the winter.
Practice:
Practice consisted of two timed rounds of which your 3 consecutive laps would decide which heat you would be placed in, the first round and although my car felt very good i found myelf trying to learn the track and by doing this moving over to allow others past. Still confident the car felt well.
The second practice and i decided to go for it in this one, car felt very good. First thing i have noticed is how the car responds round fast sweepers that lead into hairpins etc… it is very stable and you can just dab the breaks to bring the back end round. Anyway i managed to go 18th overall in practice which meant i would be in heat 2 (running in reverse).

Qualifying:
To be honest, i never managed to replicate the pace in the car from practice….. stupidly enough i was late to the rostrum so the space i stood in for practice was gone, this meant i had to stand other end of rostrum (unable to see downramp of big jump). Not thinking anything of it i managed to finish 2 runs. One of these was the first run which placed me 23rd at the time!! And to be fair i wasn’t happy with it at all. Some minor issues put me out of the last two runs, one of which was the motor coming loose (bad maintenance).
In the end i qualified 43rd or 3rd in the E Main….. defo not where i wanted to be but i was hoping to have a good final to see if i could have done better.

Final:
Not wanting to stand where i had been all day i got to the rostrum early, managed to bag the place i stood in practice!!! I was hoping this would help me a little…..
The buzzer went and straight away i was down the inside of car 2 to take 2nd place, already i felt so much more comfortable about seeing the whole track!!! Coming round to the big jump (even though you just popped on it) the car in front was not even a car length in front and as we went up the jump i tagged his wing. It really was one of those parts of the track that would decide a race, not much i could have done about it so i carried on. My main contender in the race was Neil Round who was .5 sec behind, i led from start to finish practically… In the end winning by around 3.5 seconds. Car felt really good and one of those were i asked if i had maybe tried to move on the rostrum would i have done better ?????? (excuses, who knows)
But to be in perspective, my time would have placed me 4th/5th in the B final .4 sec off Kevin Lee’s finish time.

Overall i was really happy, so much so i decided to drive down to Stotfold MCC the next morning to do some testing ready for the first National there in April.

Testing:

So far i have tested the car indoors and outdoors, both with major succes.
First up was Moto Arena indoors, pretty much the track that was used for the 2nd round of the SRCMCC/Kyosho Indoor series. With drivers like Lee Martin, Marc Rheinard, Victor Wilk, Tom Cockerill all booked in it would be a great test to see how quick the car was. I left the setup the same as the first time i ran it, only small improvements made during the day.
Untill the last round of qualifying i held TQ, this was then improved on by Lee Martin and Tom Cockerill. 3rd on the grid with Rheinard, Wilk all behind (happy days!!) Finished 5th in the final, but the car made some heads turn and the interest was pretty good.

Next up i visited Stotfold MCC, this venue will host the first round of the National series. As the weather is pretty cold/wet here the track at Stotfold is very slippy, this is an area where the mid cars struggle. Once again a couple of good drivers were in attendence with the all new TLR 22.
In practice it was clear to see that i had the pace over Bloomfield and Reeves with the new 22, this resulted in both of them fitting brand new tyres. Overall this meeting went really well and over a week of having the car i have managed to compete in 4 meetings, all have gone very well and my setups have only seen minor tweaking. I am not saying it is the perfect setup as i like my car soft, but it is the same setup Kev Lee used in practice at the Petit and he went 3rd fastest!!!!

With more and more running of the car i can only see it improve, this hopefully will see some good results….
To say i am happy with the car is an understatement, i really liked the MCS (results were really good too). The Vega Elite RB5 has everything the MCS had and more, more steering, more stability in fast and slow corners, better looks, better quality and hopefully better results for me!!!

What an amazing day. With a breathtaking ‘A’ final. Ellis Stafford up against a decent crop of competitive drivers managed to lap 2nd place in the finals. This wasn’t without a couple of minor mistakes but Ellis lost no concentration and just kept on going. Absolutely Amazing!!!

Sunday the 7th Feb 2010, a very cold day with a wet and greasy track.

Round 1:

Ellis Stafford didn’t finish the first qualifier as he lost a drive shaft cap. However Kev Lee went on and put in strong and consistent laps times. With a good solid run he finished 2nd. Kev Lee also had the fastest lap time of round 1.

Round 2:

2nd qualifier went brilliantly as Ellis Stafford went on to TQ the round. He TQ’ed the round 13 seconds ahead of 2nd place – Simon Reeves and Grant Williams 3rd. Kev Lee came 9th and held 2 of the top 10 fastest laps. Ellis had the other 8 of the 10 fastest laps.

Round 3:

Ellis Stafford was the only driver to achieve 15 laps, the first and last 15 lapper of qualifiers. Out of the 10 fastest lap times, Ellis Stafford had 8 of them and Kev Lee had 1. Kev Lee managed a respectable 3rd place. Ellis Stafford and the car looked awesome and he was a lap ahead!

Round 4:

Ellis Stafford TQ’ed again by an amazing 9 seconds. Kev Lee again putting in strong lap times came 4th. Out of the 10 fastest laps, Ellis Stafford took 7 and Kev Lee took 1 of them.

FINALS:

The final was 7 minutes. Ellis Stafford managed 19 laps, which was the only 19 lapper of the finals! He also managed to amazingly lap 2nd place. Kev Lee had an unlucky start in the finals and got badly tangled at the start. Still managing to come 6th! You will have worked out that Ellis Stafford won the final.

Ashton Armstrong our junior driver managed to come 5th in the ‘B’ final, with steady consistent driving.

Brilliant results from our brilliant Team Drivers!!

Well Done Guys!!!

An amazing result from Ellis Stafford after only his third time out with the x11. Ellis was absolutely flying (not literally) last Sunday at EPR’s Winter Warmer Meeting.
This was despite severe weather conditions which was a disadvantage to the cars and marshals!! The track was extremely slippery, wet and greasy!

Racing was postponed as the weather was so bad but finally a couple of hours later it eased up allowing the racing to begin!

Ellis went on to TQ round one, with super fast and consistent lap times. It seemed there was no catching him.

Round two – didn’t go so well as the car went off the side of the table top ramp and hit a concrete track marking. This caused very little damage – just a broken ball joint. Proving the car’s strength.

Round three – the weather wasn’t as good as the previous rounds making for a more slippery track. However Ellis put the car back in it’s place. He was on for a 15 lapper but due to a small mistake that cost him 5 seconds he just missed out.

To summarise the qualifying, Ellis TQ’ed the meeting!

In the finals Ellis changed the car slightly – this was to experiment and help him to learn more about the car.
Ellis went on to win the A Final!

We were all very pleased with this result as Sunday was used as a ‘test’ and ‘experimental’ day. The x11 glided over the bumpy sections and handled well around the challenging track.

Our under 16 driver Ashton Armstrong also drove well and consistently – despite track conditions. Ashton who has only started racing in January 2009 has noticeably improved with help and advice from the Team. Ashton managed 6th in the B Final!

WELL DONE GUYS – keep up the good work!

Well Done to Kev Lee who TQ’ed the meeting! Made a mistake in the final which put him last. Consistent fast driving got him back up to 4th place!

John Spencer came 1st in the B.

Mr Ellis Stafford went blindingly fast – This was the first time out ever with the X11. He qualified 4th in the A and managed to finished 2nd – due to traffic. Once he had passed the traffic there was no stopping him!!

Out of the top ten fastest laps in the final – 7 of them were held between Kev and Ellis.

Woohoo!!

It was a really good fully booked meeting!! Well organised and run!!
